Virtual Summer Camp Chaplaining at St. Dorothy’s Rest

Our youth minister Ethan and youth ministry assistant emeritus Spencer Hatcher spent the week of July 6th through July 10th serving as the virtual chaplains to virtual summer camp at St. Dorothy’s Rest. Check out their chaplaincy program videos below — each video is between 10 and 15 minutes and includes ways to engage in practices at home.

Day 1: Examen-ing the last six months

The briefest overview of Ignatian spirituality and how we can, through the process of simply remembering, discover God’s presence in our lives.

Day 2: Building altars in the ‘desert’ [at home]

Wherein we introduce the practice of at-home altar-making and talk about the tension between “holy” places and “mundane” places.

Day 3: Coming down off the mountain that you never climbed

Spencer shares the story of the Transfiguration and discusses that relatable feeling of the ‘mountaintop’ — the place where we want to pitch our tents and stay forever (like camp).

Day 4: The camp superpower: deciding the mundane is holy

In the final session, we talk about the superpower that all Camp People have and that Jesus probably had too: being able to make good use of the ordinary things we have around us in order to mediate the holy, like bread or fish or cloth or jarred pesto.
